School of Medicine - Grenada
Federal Loan Application Instructions
Below are the steps you will need to complete in order to borrow loans each academic year.
Please complete the financial aid process as soon as possible in order to insure your funding is approved and you obtain eligibility to register in a timely manner.
You will also begin receiving emails to your SGU email account advising you of outstanding requirements along with instruction on completing your financial aid requirements
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Complete your FAFSA online at https://fafsa.ed.gov. As you are a graduate student, you will only need to respond to the student sections and may ignore those sections that are meant for parents. Students in the School of Medicine should enter the school code G22333. If you intend on applying for a Graduate PLUS loan, US citizens or eligible noncitizens must apply using a US address in order to be eligible for the loan.
**A U.S. address is required in order to process a Grad PLUS loan request. Please make sure to use a U.S. address on the FAFSA as well as any other federal student loan application documents.
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency
When your FAFSA is processed, Federal Student Aid will cross reference databases with the Department of Homeland Security. If your citizenship is not confirmed, you will be notified that you need to document your citizenship status. Send a copy of the picture page of your US passport to the Financial Aid Office along with a signed Citizenship Documentation Verification form so that we may process your application.
All students borrowing federal loans for the first time at SGU are required to complete Entrance Counseling prior to disbursement of federal loans. Entrance Counseling should be completed online at https://studentloans.gov.
The Department of Education website offers extensive information explaining eligibility under the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program. The purpose of the Entrance Counseling is to apprise you of your rights and responsibilities as a borrower of federal loans. Entrance Counseling is comprised of a series of informational paragraphs where you would then answer questions to confirm that you understand the information.
Our office will be notified electronically by the Department of Education once SGU awards you federal loans and you have accepted your federal loans online through Student Self Service .
Master Promissory Note (MPN) - Unsubsidized and Grad PLUS loans
You will need to complete a Master Promissory Note for both the Unsubsidized and Grad PLUS loans, if you are borrowing each. Log into your account online at https://studentloans.gov.
Click "Complete Loan Agreement (Master Promissory Note)" on the drop down menu, and then select "Subsidized/Unsubsidized" loan type to complete begin the process of signing your MPN. Repeat this step, selecting "Graduate PLUS" to complete the Grad PLUS MPN.
Our office will be notified electronically by the Department of Education once SGU awards you federal loans and you have electronically accepted your federal loans on Student Self Service.
Application for PLUS Loans
Students should avoid applying any earlier than 180 days before the start of the academic year. Credit approvals are only viable for that amount of time. If the loan is applied for too early, the credit approval will become invalid and a new PLUS application will need to be submitted online for processing.
Log into your account online at https://studentloans.gov. Click "Complete PLUS Credit Counseling" on the drop down menu, and then select "Graduate PLUS" loan type. This step will guide you through the application process and credit check, and let you know if you are approved or denied.
If you are a student who is denied, as a first step you should appeal the decision. Use the option to appeal online. Students that are denied during the credit check process should complete an MPN for Direct PLUS loans in the event that the denial decision becomes an approval during the appeal process.
Accept your Financial Aid Award Offer
Log onto your SGU Student Self Service account in order to view your financial aid estimated cost of attendance and budget in order to determine how much you are eligible to borrow, as well as how much you will personally require.
You must either accept or decline the combination of all award offers in Student Self Service. Once you accept your loan awards, we can then transmit your loan information to the US Department of Education in order to receive confirmation of your completed Entrance Counseling, Master Promissory Notes, and Grad PLUS credit approval.
If everything has been completed correctly, you will see this information updated as "Received" on your Student Self Service account, under Financial Aid Student Requirements within 2-3 business days of accepting your loan awards.
If your curriculum or course load changes, adjustments will be made to your financial aid award. Once you have logged in you will need to choose the "Enter Secure Area" option. Click on "Awards". Select the current aid year and click on "Award for Aid Year". Select the "Award Offer" tab.
For students borrowing a Grad PLUS loan please be advised: This is a credit based loan. By accepting the Grad PLUS loan award offer, you are authorizing a credit check to be performed to determine your eligibility for this loan.

This will allow the Student Finances office to apply your federal loan disbursements towards all applicable non-tuition charges, such as books and health insurance, in order to satisfy your student account.
The Title IV Authorization form is available online through your SGU Student Self Service account.
