Moving Forward
by Michael B. Taylor

What am I doing in this world,
aimless, wandering, looking
for something to latch onto

Motivation sparked in an earlier time
of dreaming large
and thinking small.

Hold onto these feelings
there is no sense in delay
for without dreams, reality ceases to matter.

Supplemental Note: Mr. Taylor indicates he wrote this poem as part of an exercise during a narrative medicine workshop at NYU Lutheran Medical Center. The exercise involved a prompt taken from an existing work, in this case,‘Soul' by David Ferry. He further indicates in part, "Reading this poem, I heard the voice of a man questioning his life. It reminded me of similar questioning I have done. Based on the prompt, "What am I doing in this…" from the David Ferry piece, I chose to write about my struggles and sense of purpose in pursuit of a medical career."
